I learn a lot every time I listen to John Mearsheimer speak, and am surprised you listed him as a prime example of a hawk. His take on Ukraine exactly matches what you described a dove's as, and he wrote a whole book about the Israel lobby.
I based it mostly on this conversation, where Sachs and Mearsheimer took opposite sides of the debate: https://youtu.be/uvFtyDy_Bt0?si=bu4HaKOt5uzNSVko. I'll make a point of understanding his positions better, and of reading his books! They're on my list :)
Thanks for sharing! At the 24 minute mark in the video, John specifically says "Jeff and I agree on all sorts of issues, including Ukraine and Israel/Palestine". They do differ on China however.
What's interesting to me is that neither side, Democrats nor Republicans, is totally hawk or totally dove. It's more complex than that. While the Republicans appear to be opposed to continuation of the Ukraine war, for instance, they appear to be very supportive of Israel. In general though the Democrats do seem to be more hawkish to me, today.
That's true. The upshot being, if you're staunchly anti-war then you're politically homeless in the US today. One glaring example of how far the Overton window has shifted over the past decades.
